Hello, Veronica. How are you?
SPEAKER_00I'm fine, Marissa. I'm so excited to have you here today. I'm excited to be here. Thank you so much for this opportunity.
SPEAKER_02Did I leave anything out about your intro? Because I I know you have so such a colorful, rich, full background. Is there anything that I left out? Because I do not want to leave anything out.
SPEAKER_00Um I am also a licensed minister.
SPEAKER_02Oh, exciting. Very good. And soon to be author, right? Soon to be author. Absolutely. Let's claim that right now. Let's claim it right now. Soon to be author. Oh, so exciting. So, Veronica, I really am excited to have you here because I know oftentimes uh people struggle and they really have a lot of adversities in their lives. And yet we see some people that take that and can flip it and really turn it into their passion and their purpose and even their business online. And it's such a beautiful thing to see because it immediately gives hope to other people as they listen to their story and they say, well, if they can do it, maybe I can do it too. So problems oftentimes can uncover our purpose. So I'm I'm so excited to have you here. Would you agree with that?
SPEAKER_00I would agree with that. I really do. I am.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I know. And I think I think just being authentic in in a world now where people really uh appreciate authenticity, it allows people to connect better with others, whether it's people in our family or in a business setting with customers. It helps us develop those relationships because we're being real. It just elevates the trust level. It just it's a way to be able to inspire people. And that's what I love about it.
SPEAKER_00Yes, so do I. Um I I I totally agree with that. You know, we our lives take on so many different experiences that we have to learn some tools and strategies to um rise above those adversities that may come in our life.
SPEAKER_02Yes, absolutely, absolutely. So let me ask you this, because I know you you have so much information. I want to see if I can pull a little bit of that knowledge that you have. When we're talking about challenges and adversity, um, I actually looked up the word adversity. I I love looking at words and looking at their origin and adversity compared to challenge, adversity from the Webster dictionary said a state or instance of serious or continued difficulty or misfortune as opposed to a challenge seemed more temporary. So this adversity, it have you found that adversity can be a continued challenge for some people, a continued problem that really holds them back from being their true self?
SPEAKER_00I do. I do um believe that as well. And I part of the reason is that after someone experiences one problem, before you know it, the next problem has come. And they haven't resolved the first issue before the second issue comes, as well as the third issue. So you find yourself all in a bundle of chaos and confusion and no direction, no regard as to how do I get myself out of all of this. It's under several umbrellas. It can be a financial adversity. Um, from when you're raised, um, maybe you had a family that had to rely on state funding or state housing, and you go you fall right into that again because there's again, there is us for systematic reasons as well as for the not having the knowledge or gaining the tools and strategies that would help you pull out of those financial situations.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00And that is what helps you be able to overcome adversity. There's financial counselors out there, there are financial courses you can take, and then there's other resources around us that can help us learn how to get out of those financial situations that will not be so long-term or so continued as uh the definition for adversity is. I think that is some of the reasons why people continue to feel stuck and never finding a way out financially. And thus they live from paycheck to paycheck or from day to day, depending on because they don't have the tools and strategies to make a budget or to uh figure out needs versus wants and the necessities that that really need to be taken care of.
SPEAKER_02Right. I love that. Really breaking the cycle and getting those tools that you need, regardless what it might be, whether it's finances or whether it's mindset issues, limiting beliefs, whatever it might be, breaking that cycle and and just determining this, I can't keep going around this hamster wheel anymore. Finding another way is that is so good because so true. I know even for myself, I had to make a decision because I was very, very fearful of everything, everything and every one, very fearful. And I had to finally decide, I'm just tired of being afraid of everything, you know. I mean, what can happen to me? And I decided to tackle all those things that that frightened me, that scared me, even public speaking was one of them, and decided just to face it and and my physical body even was reacting to it, but I decided I want to get to the other side. I don't want to bow down to fear anymore. And it was a process, but I got there and and now it's really hard to keep me quiet now. I talk all the time.
SPEAKER_00I know, and and part of that too, you have to envision yourself, you know, you have to go in the mind and envision yourself doing what you love to do. Wherever that fear is, you have to kind of take it and put it in your hands. You know, it's almost like a um a process of taking the ball out of someone else's court who you might fear, or taking the ball out of the out of something tangible or intangible that is allowing you to feel so overwhelmed, so discomforted. Um, once you can envision that, no, it's mine, it's not yours, you know, it doesn't belong there. I think then you can start the process to become to overcome that adversity and even the challenge that that might be existing.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm. Absolutely, because the the two go in hand in hand a lot. So I know adversity seems like more of a chronic thing that that happens, but you're right. Take the ball and bring it to your court. And I just I just didn't want to play the the enemy game. I wanted, I was going to align myself with what God said or said who I was and believe in that and walk in that path. So let me ask you this because you know it's it's great to talk when you know when we get to the other side, but let's go back a little bit in time. Did you have any adversities or things that you had to overcome that you faced that was really difficult and you were able to get to the other side?
SPEAKER_00Yes. You know, life itself gives us so many experiences that we experienced adversity in almost every season, or we experienced some type of challenge in every season. For me, when I back it up, I'll just be honest, it was a financial challenge for me. Being a I was single, no children, no husband, not dating anyone. I I worked um and I was going to school, paying for school. And when it came to the end of school, having the debt of student loans and trying to manage it, you know, you get a budget, you you do all of that, but it can spiral out of hand once they start attacking on those the fees or the I don't know what you call it, the interest and so forth.
SPEAKER_02The interest.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. Yes, once you start getting the interest and it got out of hand. But once I um started talking to people and sharing with them why I was feeling like I never had money to do anything, you know, I couldn't go on a trip or I couldn't go out to dinner because I'm like all my money from paycheck to paycheck is all paying all my bills, the apartment, the car payment, um, the utilities, and then now the student loan. So I had to go and talk to financial consultants to kind of help me figure out how to make a budget, identify how I was spending my money so that I can make adjustments to knowing what is a need, what's a want, learning how not to buy on the spur of a moment, and learning how to go without, to sacrifice some things. And those were some of the things that I had to do to overcome some of the adversity. And as a result, I eventually got out of debt. Um, once I married my husband and I said, oh, I got all this debt. He was great at financial finances as well. And so we together made a plan how we were going to do it. And I would say within a year and a half, we were out of debt of my my student loans. He was in the military, and so we just made a plan how we were going to get me out of that. And I vowed, you know, we always say, I'll never get another credit card, I'll never get another uh loan or anything like that. And I actually stuck to it. And I started to learn how to live my life from the perspective of cash or I don't need it. Um, because once you've gone into debt and you see for me, I saw what cycle it was putting me in. It could be generational, it can just be societal. I did not want to be there. I didn't like being at that place, I didn't feel like it. So I had to take control and put the ball back in my hand to say, how are you not gonna get through this again, go through this again? And that is what I like you have a made-up mind and you have a fixed heart to believe and know that you're not going to do it. And that is what it took for me in developing these tools and strategies that even today, some 30 years later, I am not in a financial, I'm not in financial debt. I have no outstanding credit cards and I live on that, and I'm training my own children how to live a financial debt-free life.
SPEAKER_02That's awesome.
SPEAKER_00That is even as we prepare for college, but how to go about doing those things.
SPEAKER_02That's awesome. I'm sure that's going to speak to a lot of people because everyone has some type of adversity, and it could be tangible, like the finances, or it could be emotional, different things. But the the the problem is it holds us back. It it keeps us from living our full life of what we were created and intended to do. And that's the problem with it. It's not, um, yeah, it's not so much the actual thing, like, okay, so I was afraid, right? Um, if I didn't do certain things because I was afraid, I could still live my life. But to live with the what if, and same thing with the debt, to consider what if I could be debt free? What if I could be debt free? Once you ask that question, that what if, uh, you can't you can't live without having that bother you and nudge you a little bit, you know?
SPEAKER_00It affects you, you know. Um, it some people can develop anxiety. Um, because some people can't even imagine in their own mindset what what does that look like? What does it look like to be debt free? What does it look like to not owe anyone, you know, or to have credit collectors calling you and you're you're not answering your phone? Um, imagine that. Imagine how you would feel. It would take away the anxiety, it would take away the pressure that you have. And so I had to envision all of those things so that it wouldn't bother me that when my phone rang, it was the student loan people that probably put it to a collector's agency. Um, and I did have to tackle it. And when I called them and let them know, hey, I want to make good on my loans. You see that I'm paying something, but that's all I can pay right now with balancing the new things in my life that is occurring.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00But um, can you work with me? How can I how can you work with me? We can get this down. And I don't want to be 20 years paying for this loan. Right. And so that's when I had to consult some financial advisors to help me learn how to budget, how to put everything that was a necessity or that was a need or that was um that needed to be paid, all in a uh where I can see it, and how to do a monthly budget. If you got paid twice a month, you have a mid-mont mid-month and you have the end of the month, or you have the first of the month and you have the end of the uh the end of the month. And then along with me, um along with that, I was a um a woman of of faith. I'm a Christian. And so part of being a Christian is that you give back, you give back to the church where you're um where you're at, and God requires us as children of his to pay 10%. I wasn't able to pay all the 10% of what I was making because everything to down to the penny was already owed out before I even got the check, right? But then I also had to make a decision that how much am I really gonna trust God? Because he said to all he asked is 10% and the 90% is mine. And when I made a decision that I needed to be a better steward with my money, and that I needed to be a better steward and a better Christian, um, and I decided that no matter what, God's money is coming off the back. You know, it's coming first and then everybody else comes after that. Of course, you prioritize what's coming after that. And when I realized um that I didn't have to pay my 10% all at once, I divided it up according to getting paid twice a month. And it made it a lot a lot easier. We we get hung up on things wanting uh everything, everybody wants their money all at once. But if you talk to creditors and you say, Well, can I have my bill due at the end of the month? And then that way you've had two paychecks, and by the time you get to the end of the month, you save the first half, you can send it in, or you can wait till you get the second half. But who's disciplined like that?
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm. That's right.
SPEAKER_00And then you're paying the full amount by the time you get your second check at the end of the month. And those are just some of the strategies that can help individuals um in preparing to manage their debt and to manage a budget.
SPEAKER_02There's wisdom in getting counsel, which is probably why, and this isn't meant to be a shameless plug or anything, but probably why there's so many coaches out there. I mean, you're a life coach, I'm a marketing coach and certified copywriter. That's why these people are out there to come alongside as a support, to shorten the learning curve, to bring insight, to equip people to be able to reach that transformation or whatever it is they're trying to overcome, to be able to achieve those things and be who they're supposed to be. So you said it took about a year and a half. What is the the road to overcoming um the adversity? What does that look like? Is it you make the decision and then you just follow it along, you know, week after week, month after month? Or is there up and down? Are there do you question sometimes? I'm just wondering what does the road look like as far as overcoming that adversity? Is it easy? Is it is it a struggle? Is it what does that look like?
SPEAKER_00It's very bumpy. Very bumpy, okay. Overcoming uh adversity is very bumpy because every day is so different. On a good day, you got a good high, like I'm paying my bills, I'm paying them. And then you get down, you sit down, you write the checks out, you pay them, and you realize that all I got is $2 lap, and you're kind of like, oh, I really want to write this check out when I take this. And and that's just being real. So it's bumpy, but it also takes sacrifice. And so you have to learn to be disciplined. It takes discipline and it takes having someone to help you. In my case, before I met my husband, my sister was there to help guide me because she was such a frugal person and a budget analyst. So she was able to help me to figure out how to do it the proper way. Now I was good in math, but I wasn't a budget analyst. I wasn't I wasn't dealing with accounting, you know. Um, and it wasn't until I had taken a couple of classes that were an accounting class and I found out all about NASDAQ and all these other things. And I'm like, wow, well, then I'm not making good use of my money, and I'm not doing really the right things with my money. And so when you learn how to just find those strategies, seek out the people that can help you. And the most important thing is when you can find someone that you can trust and who will not judge you, you have to make up in your mind that you're gonna be honest with them and that you really do want their help.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00You know, people will give you all um the assistance that you need if you're honest with them and if you're not afraid. It it call and and I think that is the first strategy is to admit that you have a problem, whether it's an addiction, whether it's a financial situation, whether it's even in a relationship. The first thing is to admit it, and that comes in the mind to realize and rationalize that and be real about it. This really is not working as much as I want it to be. So that's number one. When you can take the first step to admit it, and then secondly, make a plan. What are you gonna do to allow yourself to get out of this situation? Thirdly, what are some resources that are there to help me? Seeking out the resources, getting the help that's necessary, and then for putting the plan into action, the implementation is necessary, and it's not half implementation, it's a hundred percent implementation.
SPEAKER_02That's right, wholehearted. Wholeheartedly. But I think when you have your eye on that what if or the possibility or the hope, because I think sometimes people don't even have the hope that it could be different. But I think once the belief is changed, I think maybe the hope would does that help drive them and make those sacrifices and make those decisions, you know, incrementally so that they can reach that goal that they're trying to achieve, the hope of of having that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, write it down. Write your goal down, write what your end result, the end result that you want. And when you go on that bumpy road, you keep looking at the end result and say, Oh, I'm not there yet. Um, but I gotta do it next time, you know.
SPEAKER_02That's right.
SPEAKER_00fasten my seat belt a little tighter exactly you know buckle up a little bit more you know yeah and so you have to you know those are some of the other things to do i just remember something my father told me about um when i was about to get married he said it's easy to get in and it's so so difficult to get out and it's also a financial you you go in with no money and you come out with a financial yeah burden sometimes yeah yeah and so he said so when you make this decision make sure that you're going in um for the long haul to thrive and to be successful at the at it and that was some of the decisions that I had to make I had to look at that same concept about that with the financial decision is that I don't like living stress stressfully. Yes I didn't like living under stress I didn't like living under pressure I didn't like because that all was affecting my health and so I had to figure out why are these things happening and when it came down to it's all the things that are stressing you out you had I had to make a decision that I need an end result but I need to see it on paper because I can't see it in my mind sometimes we lose hope and the hope is not there. It's a glimmer right so you have to write it out on paper so that you can see it and then you can envision it and then you can figure out that's why I'm living that's why I'm sacrificing and I'm just gonna pay everything even if I do have two dollars as long as I got groceries gas in my car to get me back and forth to work everything else can come later because my end result is on the paper and I'm getting there closer and closer. And it's almost like not big steps or big leaps it's like I'm edging my way slowly like this little frog, you know you're gonna make it so you just have to do it and and and really um you have to really want it. If you don't want it and you play around in your mind like I want it but I don't want it the biggest challenge is that people want everything right now in the immediate like a microwave but um it takes time and it's a process to get there. And you just have to be able to make up in your mind that I'm I'm in it for the long haul and I'm willing to take as long as it takes to get to where my end result is. Yeah which is it could be stress free or it could be uh getting out of financial debt and and learning to live a debt free life.
SPEAKER_02Yeah you made a a great point how it affects whatever the adversity is it affects other areas in our lives like for you it was stress creates this domino effect that we might not even realize but on the flip side as we overcome these things it opens up opportunity because even the finances maybe it allows you to you know visit someone that maybe someone that's a shut in because you have extra gas in your car or maybe it allows you to buy a little extra groceries and maybe share the groceries with you know a a relative that needs them it provides opportunities maybe not huge opportunities but you could do a little more with the resources you have for others which is a lovely thing as well so that's awesome.
SPEAKER_00And and you're so right and one other thing I do want to add is that I had another friend who was a mother uh a single mother of two and what we would do we would go um to Costco and we would buy in bulk and we paid what we paid and we divided it up. So then that way that's how the food stretched longer for me because I'm single I don't need a whole lot so that was some other strategies that helped it helped her out she didn't have to worry about oh I really want this bulk but I really don't need that much but then I came along and we we decided to do that. Yeah it's so much cheaper when you buy in bulk right you know because normally I wouldn't normally need a Costco card or whatever. And so we did that and I must say that was some another thing that I I found to be a good strategy outside of when I was really hungry all I had to do was to go and my parents go to my parents and my dad always had a bag ready for me hand goods or whatever. So um but not everybody has that so just finding those ways because most people are struggling because they don't have um anyone to help them or any assistance. They're all bearing at the price all by themselves.
SPEAKER_02So um so for the the people like women especially once they are overcoming the adversity whatever it might be and they're kind of rediscovering now who am I? What what is my purpose now that I don't have this burden now that I'm coming out of this adversity what is my purpose? What what else? Because maybe they haven't had an opportunity to even think of it or dream about it or consider what to do because they've been so oppressed by this adversity. What would you say to women who are kind of seeking now to figure out who they are and what their role is in this world and maybe their kids are growing up and already moving out of the house what would you say to women like that?
SPEAKER_00Yeah sometimes our adversity catapults us into our passion. Amen and which also leads to us finding purpose um for me it was my desire to help other women other women not struggle other women not um feel so stuck in finding out who they are you know we go through so many different things and that was one of the things that has catapulted me into relationships because I saw so many women in relationships lose their voice and lose their identity as a result helping them figure that out to be that they are empowered and that they can their voice does matter and that regardless as to you don't think you're being seen I see you. Yes you know and so that's part of what we do to help uh and to help both couples um realize that that they're in an inter partnership that although we may have the man as we're told to be the head of the household but two is better than one. Well and God in his wisdom how to create a helpmate for the man right who would Adam be had there not been E I'm just I'm just teasing and so that's what I say you know so even for couples that um don't feel like um they are a part of the marriage that oh he runs everything or she runs everything.
SPEAKER_02Yeah sometimes it's the opposite isn't it sometimes it's a woman that's running everything.
SPEAKER_00Yes and so we have to make sure that we realize that this person is in it as equally as I am and that it takes both of us to sit down communicate identify what's not working and discover what we do want in our marriage and a lot of times it's our selfishness that we need to get rid of in addition to that um not just our selfishness we need to sit down and talk about goals we make plans and goals what we're talking about when it comes to financials and things like that and for our careers but what couple starting out would have a goal in mind and realize that their adversity or their challenge is to help draw them closer and to make life a little easier yes there's no perfect marriage yeah but we can we can sit down and we can discover who we both are and who we both want to be and what we want in our marriage that we can have a healthy marriage. Yes absolutely perfect we're gonna have some challenges but as you mentioned the definition for challenges are temporary. Yeah yeah but we can always find the tools and the strategies to help us get through those do you do this with your husband I do. Oh that's awesome that's awesome this is Alliance Seminars coaching this is what we do with couples that are get planning to get engaged or are engaged as well as couples that I like to identify it as having hiccups because hiccups go away. Yes and what you know we find out what it takes to get rid of the hiccups and so we have to find out what what's taking what it takes for us to get through the unresolved issues that we're currently having. Awesome and making a plan to get out of it and sticking to it and and just communicating and being honest about it.
SPEAKER_02So for the women maybe then and and the men too I don't want to exclude the men for those people that want to feel more empowered feel like they are moving in a direction not being tossed left and right by circumstances or situations that want to perhaps be a better steward of their time of their finances of the gifts that God has given them what would you say to them I would say go deep into who you think you are you know or go deep and think and identifying those things that are causing you to feel the way that you're feeling about yourself whether you feel less than more than or whatever and then just kind of look for mentors.
SPEAKER_00Yes look for someone that is doing better than you and that is doing what you want to do. Don't be afraid to approach them and ask them I like what you're doing I like you know I'm interested in that could could you help me could you give me some direction how you got to where you are and here's where I am can you give me some advice as to how I might start the road to get to where I want to be it's not being jealous it's not being but it's just that I admire what you're doing and I and from afar it's some it seems like something I want to do but I need a mentor to help me get there because I feel stuck I feel like I can't move forward. So look for someone that can help you move to your next step. That's all and don't stop there. Find the next person that can help you to the next step because our life is always evolving. Just because today you might feel challenged and stuck doesn't mean that you're to remain there. There's always a way out and there's always someone that went through what you're going through that that is willing to reach back down to pull you up. And someday you can be a mentor to someone else and someday you're gonna be a mentor because that's the payback. The payback is when I get the help that I need to get out of where I am I need to go back and help someone else that I see that is going through the same pattern that I'm going through.
SPEAKER_02That's right and you never know it could be your very own children.
SPEAKER_00It could be your very own children and then sometimes it could be writing your own family and it can be writing your workplace and it doesn't you know you can meet the person at the grocery store. Let me just say it this way someone needs you. Yes oh I still believe that someone needs you and so realize that each day that you live someone needs you. And so whatever you're going through and you get out of there's someone near you that is probably needing your assistance.
SPEAKER_02Yes I truly believe that as well there's a a a scripture and that I love it's 2 Timothy and I don't know if the listeners if you know anything about the first book of Timothy or the second book of Timothy Paul um who was a great leader uh Paul was discipling uh Timothy he was young and he was trying to be a mentor to Timothy and uh it's beautiful. I mean I always cry in 2 Timothy it's so beautiful because Paul's getting ready to to die and he's trying to give him those last words you know those those uh words of wisdom for Timothy to live by and he says this in 2 Timothy 1 7 it says for God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity but of power love and self discipline a lot of the words we heard today and I love this scripture because that word power it it's not necessarily power to rule over others but to rule over ourselves. And I think that kind of sums up everything that you were saying Veronica because you you were you were just talking about the choices that we make and writing things our goals down and making a decision. It's really the power that we have over ourselves.
SPEAKER_00Would you agree to then I would agree with that I love that uh scripture and what it means is you're in control of yourself. So the power lies within you you can't control anyone else but you and so you have to ensure that you are able to reach way down and pull out all the power that you have to overcome. That's beautiful you know another way of saying that scripture is that God has not given us the spirit of fear but of love power and sound mind.
SPEAKER_02So in addition to that it's just not the power there of um controlling yourself with that self-discipline but also have a made up mind go into your mind it's it's the the thoughts that you have negative and positive you want all positive yes because part of getting out of adversity the first step is um the first step starts with the mind yes what do you envision yes what do you want to see and can you imagine that you can get there yeah that's beautiful would you mind would you uh I don't usually do this my podcast but I I feel it's appropriate would you pray over the people that are listening that they would be able to find that courage and that power from within to be able to achieve the things that they need to achieve yes most gracious and heavenly father we come right now first of all God just to say thank you thank you for getting us through this day thank you for life itself thank you for being creator of our of our very being we ask right now that we come first to repent of any sin that may hinder this prayer and that you will be allow us to not let our adversities overtake us.
SPEAKER_00But God you will show us the way that you will give us direction and that you will give us a plan as to how to move forward in our life. Your word talks about in Galatians 6 and 9 that let us not become weary in doing good for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up Lord help us not to give up just because we're weary where we are where we're feeling stuck we're feeling lonely we're feeling like we don't have anyone else but us to help us to get through it.
SPEAKER_02Father provide the resources to those that might stand in need right now even provide the uh the financial resources we ask that you will cover the relationships that might be hindered right now that might be going through some challenges Lord God Father you know like the sheep you know feed us Father feed us your word feed us your love feed us um your spirit that we might be kind that we might be more loving we might be more generous we may have more understanding and discover purpose Lord God and that we will be empowered to realize that we are not in this by ourselves and that it takes you to be to help us so right now God we just ask that you continue to just be with everyone under the sound of my voice that you would continue to lead guide direct and protect us that you will heal deliver and set us free to not be stuck and held hostage to our adversities and to our challenges and to our habits that don't mean as well we ask this in your in your son Jesus name amen amen to that yes thank you so much Veronica this was wonderful very rich and for those of you online um if you even if you have a business online that doesn't mean that you are free of adversity and challenges whether it's in relationships or it's in finances or maybe mindset things or fear whatever it might be and I hope this spoke to your heart so that you can be resilient online and create positive change in the world. Veronica any last words before before we say goodbye?
SPEAKER_00What I would say is some of the strategies that helped me to get through my situation and will help you all to build a re a life of resilience and become empowered in our life situations is reading God's word daily in devotion.
