Welcome, welcome, welcome. Marissa here, and I have a special guest, Jill Wright. Hello, Jill.
SPEAKER_00How are you doing? Hey Marissa, it is so good to be here and so good to be collaborating in this way with you. I just I love it.
SPEAKER_01I love it too. Yes. Jill and I are friends. We were in a mastermind a few years back, pre-pandemic days. And uh we even roomed together in a conference that we attended. So we were roomies. And uh yeah, we got the chance to have some meals together and get to know each other. And I just love her message. And I asked her if she would be on the podcast, and she said, yes, yay. So, Jill, tell everyone a little bit about what it is that you do. How do you show up for people? What it is that that your business is all about.
SPEAKER_00Well, I am Jill the money coach, and that's how a lot of the people in the life coaching community um know me. And I coach other coaches on their money mindset. And what that means is I just show them their blind spots, I remove the roadblocks and show them how to go forward faster, further by just removing all those blocks for them.
SPEAKER_01I love it. And sometimes I think people don't realize they have those mental blocks until you know they are wondering why is everybody else making more money than I am? And I provide lots of value and I provide a lot of services. What's going on? And I think they get maybe a little nervous if they get on one-on-one calls. So, did that ever happen to you?
SPEAKER_00I'm a little bit different. I am my ideal client, but I'm also different than my ideal client. There are things that my ideal client struggles with that I didn't struggle with as much. There is a lot of fear and resistance. And I think that is one thing that keeps coaches and entrepreneurs from getting the results that they want. I did have a lot of resistance, but I didn't necessarily resonate with the fear. Um, so on consults, I didn't have a problem telling people my price. I didn't have a problem charging. And that is something that a lot of my clients struggle with. But I completely understand it because I have those same blocks in other areas. And so that's, you know, it's the same pattern, but it doesn't show up for me there. It doesn't present for me there. It presents for me in, you know, putting myself out there, um, putting out my content, uh, right, talking to people and things like that. It's the same thought pattern, but it just presents in a different way.
SPEAKER_01Right. Gotcha. Good answer. So, what got you started of all the different things you could have done online? You decided to land here. What got you started really focusing on this and wanting to help other people break out of these uh barriers, you know, that they've created for themselves so that they can succeed?
SPEAKER_00Well, I feel like I've really been a coach all my life, even though I didn't know what I didn't know coaching existed for so long, up until probably 2017. Um, but I worked in corporate for about 20 plus years. And I was successful there, but I never truly felt like I belonged there. I just felt like there was just something missing. There was something more that I was meant for. And so in 2017, um, you know, my husband wasn't real happy in his job. I wasn't very happy in my job. And so we really started talking about, you know, what else is there for us? And so in 2018, he and I have an accounting background and he does too. The difference between us is he loves accounting, and I was good at accounting, but I didn't love it. I love the creative process, I love problem solving, I love helping people and listening and generating ideas and brainstorming and collaborating and all those kinds of things. And accounting is just not um not real abundant in the in those areas. So I totally get it.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00In 2018, uh he quit his job and retired um permanently, and I quit my job and retired from corporate, but then I started um my life coaching business. And this is just something that the Lord led me to. And I just absolutely love it. I wish I had been doing this all my life.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I totally get it. Now, I hope everyone caught a couple of really important things that Joel just said because she's she was skilled at one thing, right? But it wasn't something that she was really passionate about. Because sometimes people that are thinking about getting into the online space and doing some type of business or side hustle, provide some kind of product or service, they try to align it with the skills that they have, but they're not really excited about it. It's not so sexy, it's not something that they can't wait to get up every morning and do. And it's going to, I think in the long run, at least my opinion, it's going to be hard to really navigate through the ups and downs of an online business if you don't really love it. And that comes back to your why. Would you say that that's true?
SPEAKER_00Oh, I totally agree. Because I have seen so many people, you know, even in choosing a career, people will chase the dollars. Um, or, you know, and I see a lot of people get into coaching, and when it's time to choose their niche, they say, okay, what am I good at? And what you're good at is not necessarily something that you want to talk to people about all day long. It's not something that you want to learn more about. It's not something that you want to that you can't, like you said, can't wait to get up in the morning and go find out how to make better and things like that. Because, like you said, there are a lot of ups and downs in business. And so you better have a really good reason why you're there and um because otherwise it's gonna be a lot of wanting to quit. And I I have totally been there too. So I know even with my strong whys, there are days when I'm like, I just can, God, I know you called me to this mission, but I just don't know how I can keep going.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think everyone has that moment. I think I I think if they say they don't, I I think they're fibbing a little bit because I think every and I think the the reason sometimes is fatigue. It could be just that we're tired and we just need to go to bed and get some rest, maybe after a lunch or maybe after a lot of traveling or whatever it might be. And again, when we're in the online space, we're stretching ourselves, we're doing things that we have not done before. We are growing at the same time. And facing those things and doing them, being totally willing to do it, still takes a lot out of you, right? It takes a lot out of you. So it is something that we all go through that. So if you're listening and you're going through something like that, you're normal. You're you're part of the group. So welcome to the club because uh it is it is a part of it. But then we know better as we continue on year after year that this is just more an effect of something else, maybe just fatigue or maybe just needing a coach, right? And you mentioned coach. There was a time that I didn't know what a coach was either. I said, what are these coaches? What do they coach on? What do they do? You know, what why does somebody need one? Is it a therapist or what is it? Because I had no idea. Can you speak a little bit about what coaches do?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think of a coach um in the in a similar way as a personal trainer. You know, why do you go to a personal trainer? It's so that you can um have somebody to hold you accountable, it's so that you can have someone uh make sure that you have good form, it's so that you have someone to challenge you when you want to quit to give you a different perspective, it's to help you be better at whatever it is you want to do. And there's there are coaches for pretty much anything out there. I hear about a coach and I think to myself, there really is a coach for everything because that is not something that I would have thought there was a coach for, but then I hear about a coach. And I mean, there are people that struggle with so many different things. And I think, you know, there's when you think about therapy, that's you know, making your life functional, going from dysfunctional to functional, or making your life work, going maybe going from surviving to enjoying your life. And I think of a coach as sort of that that growth area because we all need the basics, right? But then we all also are driven, once we have satisfied the basics in our life, are driven and aspire to be more. And so I think a coach helps you do more, be more, have more than you ever thought possible. A coach shows you, um, gives you uh a more expansive view of what is truly possible for you.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I love that analogy of a personal trainer, because a personal trainer will also help you eliminate what's not healthy and also focus on the areas that are weak and really be able to leverage the areas that are stronger. You know, whether you're your weak area or your abs, they're gonna help you develop your abs. You know, they're gonna help you get your heart rate up, they're gonna help you maybe eliminate some of the sugars that you're eating. They're also gonna hold you accountable and they're gonna help you be consistent. And I think that's what coaches do. And and there's coaches that will do one-on-one coaching because you do one-on-one coaching, right?
SPEAKER_00I have I have a few different containers that I work in when I coach on money mindset. And one of those is uh one-on-one private coaching.
SPEAKER_01And then you do there's group coaching. Do you do group coaching as well?
SPEAKER_00I have um a course that I launched last year, and I haven't opened enrollment for that um in a while because I'm rebuilding that course, but it is a course slash group coaching program uh to teach people how to use my mastery process to uh master the ease of money.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Just giving everybody, the audience, an idea of the flexibility that you have with a coach, because nowadays digital products are great, right? I cut my teeth with digital products, but there comes a time where you need to talk to someone. And if you notice, a lot of digital products now come with live coaching calls or live QA calls because it just doesn't seem like it's enough. And so coaches will come alongside people, maybe in the form of an addition to a digital product, or maybe like Jill was talking about one-on-one or group coaching. So there's different price ranges that people can come in and really take the advantage of a coach. And as Jill said, there are different coaches. I do copywriting coaching and I do online business coaching strategy, Jill just coaching, and you might be thinking, maybe I can do coaching too, and that's totally possible. That's totally possible. So in your business, were there was there a time that maybe it was it was really challenging? Um, and and what would it that what would that have been? Um, was it something just um technical? Like today, I'll I'll tell you very honestly, candidly, Facebook ads drive me crazy. I have a love hate for with Facebook, but uh that is something that is a challenge, not enough to discourage me, but that's one thing that, you know, as far as ads, uh I'm looking at different ways of spending my ad dollars because Facebook challenges me. So if you're a Facebook expert, let me know. So what do you think, Jill? Was there anything that was was challenging for you?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I think I I think the better question is what didn't challenge me?
SPEAKER_01So authentic, yes, for sure, for sure. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I think at every point along the journey of building a business, no matter where you are, there is something that is going to be challenging for you, no matter what level of growth you're at. Um, I think for a for a long time, what I struggled with, and I um started to mention this a little bit earlier, and I think a lot of coach coaches struggle with this, is I struggled with putting myself out there. Um I have struggled with talking about myself, and it wasn't necessarily from fear, that wasn't ever something that I completely resonated with, you know, because a lot of coaches will ask you, well, if you're not doing that thing, it must be because you're afraid of it. But, you know, it's I mean, we don't exercise sometimes, but it's not because we're afraid of it. So true. So true. But um, I always I have always, or most of my life, been sort of one of those people that loves supporting people and and just doing it from the background. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I think our personalities are different. Some of us are introverts. I'm really an introvert. I mean, I could I could be all day long just working and writing copy and be just a happy little camper. And but but you know, that just doesn't work to serve people and if we have their best interest, it really uh sometimes we have to be flexible and meet people where they are. And I think that's probably what you're you're sharing that you wanted to show up for people, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, exactly. Yeah, um, yeah. Uh I and so what I've done is I've tapped into other strengths, I've leaned into other strengths that I have. Um I don't know if you've taken Clifton 34 strengths, but relate relator is very high to me. And that's about relationships and building um relationships with people. And so relationships are important to me. Kindness and compassion are high on my core values list, making people feel special, feel at ease, feel heard, feel seen. All of those are really important to me. And so I love, and developer is also high on my 34 strengths. So I love putting people, you know, lifting them up and encouraging them and empowering and equipping them. And so I don't focus that much on myself. I focus more on other people. I think that's just a natural tendency. Um, the the other, and and then the other challenges that I've had to overcome really were all about limiting beliefs, just beliefs that I absorbed as I was growing up, um, things that happened in my life that maybe were, you know, some of those minor traumas that, you know, it was better for me to be invisible than to be visible in my family. And so those things can all impact, and and a lot of that stuff was subconscious. It wasn't something that I was consciously believing, and so I had to try different techniques, different tactics, different uh tools, different ways of going about things to uncover those things so that I could address them and find a way out of that. Like I said, it wasn't fear, it was more resistance, and it was more, you know, it was um it was more of a preference for me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't want to do that. Yeah, do I have a choice? Totally. I I totally get it. I totally get it. And I know that you've overcome a lot of it because I don't know if you guys know it listening, but Jill has an amazing, beautiful Instagram. And she shows up live on there and she's got some amazing quotes on there. It's really aesthetically beautiful. Uh I I'm not, I don't have that talent. Mine looks like um like a hot mess on Instagram. I just whatever I'm starting to post there, I'm trying to get better at it. I'm learning more about Instagram. But Jill, you've done an amazing job to show up and be consistent. I really admire that about you. So whatever it was that had that resistance, you totally overcame it. So well, I have a great branding coach too. So that's awesome. Oh, see, she still got a coach. Well, that's how we met. We met because we we signed up to have a coach. And so that's how we met. So people that are coaches, um, doesn't mean they have it all together. They have coaches too. And right now I have um I have two coaches. So it's like we are continuously learning, continuously perfecting. And the outcome is we serve people a little better that way. You know, we always are sharpening our skills and always learning. We never arrive. So, what tips can you give people when it comes to money mindset? What are some of the maybe the common mistakes that you see or common challenges or the things that you have to repeat all the time for people that seems to be a sticky point for people?
SPEAKER_00I think most coaches and entrepreneurs uh just overcomplicate things. I think simple strategies can create such huge shifts over time. And so I think focus on the one degree or the half degree of shift at any given time because over time that's going to compound. Yes. So keep it simple. That's that's tip number one. Um, no matter what you do, keep it simple. Constrain and focus. Because when you constrain and focus, it gives you more freedom and flexibility, but it also makes it easier to be successful. And that's just one way that I make money easier for my clients is just helping them keep it simple, constrain, and focus.
SPEAKER_01Excellent. And there's a lot to be said to keep it simple. And I know for my uh copywriting clients, I have to let them know that you're always going to be improving by 1%, you know, a little bit of tweaking because it really is a process of assembling and editing. The magic is in the editing. And I said, you're gonna improve things, but yes, you're absolutely right. Over time, when you look back, like anything else, you know, um, you will be better. Like even the analogy with the gym. At the time, we're not seeing it, we're not feeling it, we're a little sore, you know. But then we look back after three months and we're going, wow, my clothes are fitting better. I actually have more energy. It's kind of a slow process where we look back and we see all the benefit of it. And it's the same way. And then you had that you said also about focus. Um, what was it? You said something else and focus. What was it? Keep it simple, constrain and focus.
SPEAKER_00Constraint. Can you can you unpack constrain a little bit? Yeah. So I I figured out that I was doing this a few years ago. And what I decided to do was I decided to focus on three simple things in my business. And I think this is really easy to come up with, and I'll give you mine. I call them the three C's, clients, content, and connection. And those are the three things that I'm going to focus on in my business. Now that may look different in quarter one than it does in quarter four. It might look different in 2021 than it does in 2022, but I'm always coming back to make sure, you know, what am I doing for my clients? What am I doing out there for my audience in terms of content? And how am I connecting? How am I connecting with my audience? How am I connecting with other entrepreneurs? Other coaches, how am I building my network? How am I serving my network? Who am I collaborating with? And I think no matter how much time you decide to spend in your business, whether it's five hours or whether it's 50 hours, you can always focus on just three simple things. They don't have to be my simple things. You know, it depends on what your business looks like. But, you know, for me, you know, if whatever time, if I'm going to spend 30 hours a week in my business, how much of that time is going to be distributed to clients? How much of that time is going to be distributed to content? And how much time is going to be distributed to um connection? I love that. And so that really helps you develop filters and foundations that are going to support your business. Filters to help you make decisions. What am I going to say yes to? What am I going to say no to? Are going to come back to those three simple things. And you can look at, you know, for a particular quarter or a month, what is my objective in the area of clients during this quarter? What is my objective in the area of content or in the area of connection? And that will filter it down even further for you. So those are some really simple ways to keep it simple.
SPEAKER_01I love it. I love working in quarters too. Three is a is a great number. Working in quarters with three months in it, setting up your three goals for the quarter if you want. Or sometimes I just have one, you know, depending on what it is, no more than three. And then, you know, looking at three goals maybe for the month, or depending on what you're doing, could be one. And then your daily stuff, looking at what are the top three things that you need to get done. It works so well, just focusing on one through three and just that. And I love the fact that you said, you know, you have put what is a priority in your business first, and you've identified that. It's kind of like the jar, the glass jar where you put the big rocks in first for productivity, then you put the little pebbles, and then finally you put all the sand. That's kind of how we prioritize things. We make sure that we take care of those big rocks first. And that can be definitely client revenue related, content, lead generation. And then the other one was connecting, collaboration, partnerships, and things like that. I mean, that in a nutshell is a basis, a foundation for a solid, you know, rock solid business, because that's what we we have to do. And we can so easily go on rabbit trails, right? It's so easy to do that, that we have to intentionally do that. I mean, I have to do it every day when I'm journaling. Otherwise, I'm often running and going in the wrong direction. So I have to pull myself back. Awesome.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and you want to be able to do that with all of your resources. So, you know, we talked about constraining and focus, but it's not just with money, it's not just with time, it's also with energy and attention. Any resource you have, you can apply these concepts and this uh idea of simplicity too.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. If you think like um, well, if you well, we don't see that anymore because all of our temperature gauges are all, you know, digital now. But you remember how you could tell the temperature when the red was going up and you could see if it was 80 degrees and 70 degrees, and we don't even have those anymore anywhere.
SPEAKER_00Mercury.
SPEAKER_01I know the mercury in there. It's kind of like your energy is at say 100% in the morning. And then as it goes to 10 in the morning, 12 noon, three o'clock, it starts slowly going down, down, down, down. So we really have to figure out, you know, what is it that's most important in the day? And for me, it's a writing. Anything if I have something that involves writing, I do it in the morning because that's when I'm fresh and I have better ideas. Doesn't always work that way. Sometimes I have to write late in the afternoon, depending on a deadline and stuff, but it's recognizing that. And I think you talked about strengths. That's also, I feel like leveraging your strengths, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I did so much of that work this past year, um, just figure just learning different ways of looking at who I am and how I operate in the world. So I looked a little bit at human design, I learned my Enneagram type, and I mentioned Clifton 34 strengths. I think understanding how you work, and you can do even just, you know, if you do time audits, then you'll see um you'll learn a lot about yourself just doing that. You do energy audits, same thing. And so there are a lot of ways that you can look at and learn to um to see how you best operate in the world and when you best operate, yeah. Um, is as far as time of day and energy levels and days of the week and just lots of different opportunities to get to know who you are. That's that's another thing that I think limits people um is that they don't go into learning about who they are with sort of this perspective of whatever I am is exactly what I'm supposed to be. And and I can be successful being who I am. And so they they have a lot of judgment around how they operate or what they how they do things, or you know, maybe I don't have a lot of discipline or I don't have a lot of structure or I'm not a calendar person or something like that. And when you make judgments like that, that that that definitely holds you back as well.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. No, I love that. I think it does start with ourselves. And for those of you listening to, um, I did the same thing. I went through the whole thing, the Enneagrams and all of that, and did some classes, even at church. We had some leadership classes. We did a lot of those to really discover who we are. And we also um did some assessments as far as our spiritual gifts, so that we can see a good overview of the practical gifts that God has given us, but also the spiritual gifts and how they work together. And I think when we do that, it helps us as we begin to develop a team, because then there's that team dynamic that Lencioni talks about so much in his books. He's such a good author. But it's it's really good in developing a team. And and really the churches, when I was uh working in ministry, it was the focus was you developing yourself, figuring out your own strengths and areas of weakness and those kind of things. But then how do you interact with a team so that there's better team building and better understanding for the ultimate goal or mission that was trying to be accomplished? I think it's important it starts with us, and then we can give ourselves some grace. So what if we're not good at something? You know, then we find someone that does it. You talked about accounting. I I hate the money part of business. So I have a bookkeeper CPA that does that because I don't want to do it. Just tell me what the taxes are and that's it. I don't want to do it. So I recognize that, but I'm okay with it. I don't I don't need to learn how to do that. I don't want to. That's where you say, I don't want to do that. So anyway, that's awesome. So um, if someone wanted to work with you, Jill, if they felt like, gosh, I really need to wrap my brain around all of this, how can they connect with you? Do you have something coming up, or is there some way that they can get a hold of you?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, uh, the best way to get a hold of me is just to go to uh JillWrightcoaching.com. You can also find me on social media, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, at Jill the Money Coach. Um and I have I have a book on Amazon. It's called Money Lies. That's uh that's available. So you can read up and um on and money lies are just limiting beliefs that we believe about ourselves or about money that really hold us back. And a lot of them are those subconscious beliefs that I talked about that you really can't overcome until you become aware of them. And I'm huge on building awareness around the stories we tell ourselves and the narratives that we live in every single day. Um, but I also I'll be releasing another book this year. It's gonna be called No Matter What. And a lot, it has a lot to do with some things that we talked about today, which is getting to know yourself, um living in grace with who you are and and how that impacts your business and becoming more of you makes you more successful. I'm also holding hosting another retreat. I hosted my first retreat last year, and it was amazing. I absolutely loved it. Uh, it was here in Nashville, Tennessee, and this year the retreat is going to be based on the book that I release in a couple of months. Oh, how cool doing a deep dive into the concepts in the book and really applying them. The thing I love about retreats is that it's a really great opportunity to immerse yourself in this work for four straight days. It people come out with so such huge transformations when you're able to every day come back and and look at things again and look at them in a different light and look at them in a different perspective. And and just you can grow so much in those four days. It's just incredible.
SPEAKER_01That's awesome. My son lives in Nashville, Tennessee. Hmm, that sounds interesting. Great opportunity. Business, yeah, one of the personal trips.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Last year she um she had a brother that lives here, but she lives out on the West Coast. So she came to the retreat and then she spent a couple extra days here, and they tour, you know, kind of went around Nashville together. And so it was a great time um for her to get with her brother because they live on opposite ends of the country, they don't get to see each other.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and it's always nice to crash at a relatives rather than stay in a hotel to take advantage of that.
SPEAKER_00Do you have a date set for that? For that retreat? Um, the tentative dates and and the final dates will be pretty close to this, but the tentative dates are September 21st through the 25th. So in the past, so it might vary one or two days on either end.
SPEAKER_01And they can go to your website and then see all that when when the time comes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, actually, if they want to go and get signed up on the interest list, on the waiting list, then they can do that in just uh Jillwrightcoaching.com backslash or I mean slash uh elevate dash retreat dash interest.
SPEAKER_01Got it. Yeah, I'll put all these in the show notes. So if you guys are going, what was that? What did she say? I'll put it in the show notes so that you can have all those links, her social media, the wait list, all of that so that you have that. So not to worry if you're listening and driving, don't get in a wreck. So I'll have those for you. Thank you, Jill. That was just so helpful. I love talking about this. This is one of my favorite topics. I think it's so, so important. And uh really to untangle the mess that we create in our heads and you know, what we think about becomes our master. You know, we have to be careful the like you said, the narratives, the stories that go through our head and catch those and figure out is it reality or is it, you know, imagination? Is it something that is not real at all? And uh that's how I overcame a lot of fears is to the minute I felt some type of anxiety or some kind of emotion that was negative, I stopped to see what it was that I was thinking about. And I had to figure out, is this real or is this just something that I've conjured up? It's the same story I keep playing in my head. And that helped a lot too, but it took time, it took time to do that. And I didn't have a coach, so I had a coach myself, but I didn't know about coaches back then. So, in any event, uh I'm gonna put all those links in the show notes. Jill, what's when what's the last last piece of advice that you might want to give everyone or some thought that you might want to leave everyone with?
SPEAKER_00Money is fun and money is easy.
SPEAKER_01That's awesome. I love it. Money is fun and money is easy. It's not evil, folks. The incorrect use of money is evil, but that that's on the person, right? But money itself is a tool, it's a resource. So I love that. I love that. Well, thank you so much, Jill. I really appreciate you being on the show. You gave us such value, so many great, amazing nuggets. I know this is really gonna help and bless many people. And I wish you much success on the retreat and all the things that you're planning in the future. I know you're gonna impact a lot of people. So thank you for that.
SPEAKER_00Thanks so much, Marissa, for having me on. It's been great catching up with you and and talking about the thing that I like to talk about all day, which is money.
SPEAKER_01I know. It's awesome. It's awesome. All right, everyone. Take care and we'll talk to you soon.
